Hello and welcome to day two of our instructor introductions. Today we welcome new instructor, Ms. MaryJo Nelson to our teaching staff this season! MaryJo has been traveling the world for the last many years and is back in Fargo-Moorhead. We are excited to have as part of our dance family!

MaryJo Nelson

Q & A

Q. What is your favorite part about teaching?

A. I love being able to watch how students grow and gain confidence as dancers. I think it's especially beautiful when I see students figure out how to stop thinking so hard and to just live and experience the music and the movement. I always hope to inspire students to be the best they can be.

Q. What inspires you?

A. Music inspires me. Music on its own is so emotive and makes me feel like I have to move and express visually the story that the music is telling me. Also, watching amazing dancers and amazing pieces choreography that make me feel something inspires me to want to be better and do better.

Q. Tips for our dancers?

A. Work hard. As with anything, you will only get out of dance what you put into it. Learn from as many different teachers in as many different styles as possible. Learn from people who are better than you. Practice good technique. Create good habits. And once you've done all that, forget about it all and just live in the movement. If you never take the courage to let go and show people your heart, then no one will ever have the privilege to see how great you are.

Q. Favorite snack?

A. Rice cakes or gummy bears :)

MaryJo Nelson has been moving since the age of three, beginning with gymnastics and later, after competing for several years in USAG, transitioning to dance. MaryJo moved to Fargo from Phoenix when she was 13 and spent her high school years studying ballet at Brant’s School of Dance Arts. During her senior year, she also competed on the nationally ranked West Fargo High School dance team and was a choreographer for the team. After graduating, MaryJo spent three years with the California based performing arts group, The Young Americans, during which time she had the opportunity to teach dance and perform all over the world in countries including the UK, Germany, Poland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Japan, and China.

At the age of 22, MaryJo crewed on a sailboat from San Diego to central pacific Mexico. She decided she liked Mexico so much that she stayed and ended up living there for the next six and a half years. For her first three years there, she made her living teaching aerial silks and performing as a dancer and aerialist. For the last several years, MaryJo has been working professionally at theaters in and near Puerto Vallarta, playing starring roles including Roxie in Chicago, Cinderella in Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Kira in Xanadu, and Janet Weiss in The Rocky Horror Show. This past season she also had the privilege to choreograph NuName Production’s Chicago for which she received rave reviews.

After spending most of the last ten years abroad, MaryJo has finally decided to move back to Fargo to be close to her family. She feels so fortunate to have had the opportunity to train in so many different styles of movement from a variety of teachers all over the world, and she can’t wait to be able to share her passion for story telling through dance with the students at Gasper’s School of Dance!

YAGP 2018 - Kansas City

A week ago 7 GSD dancers and owner, Matt Gasper traveled to Kansas City, MO for Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) ballet competition. We are so proud of these dancers dedication and hard work prepping for this competition and going on the Folly Theatre stage and sharing their passion with the judges and the audience.

YAGP is different than other competitions. There are only 2 categories: Variations and Contemporary. There are 3 age groupings: Pre-Competitive, Junior and Senior. And only the top 12 are recognized at the awards ceremony, which takes place the last day of the competition. This is a difficult competition with amazing dancers from all over the country. The dancers just getting to that stage and performing at their best is all we can ask.

This season Sofia Astolfi made top 12 for her Variation (as well as recognized for her 2nd variation in the top 24. 24 were recognized due to the mass amount of variations in the Junior age group). We are delighted for her recognization!

Mateo Leslie made the top 6 for male dancers in variations. He really commanded the stage this season and we are excited for his accomplishments.

But just because our other competitors were not recognized, doesn't mean they didn't give it their all. We are proud of each and every one of them, whether they were recognized or not. So Congratulation dancers, you work this season doesn't go unrecognized and each and every one of you have improved and continue to improve on and off stage. Your confidence level this season is also something we have been striving for and it is a pleasure to see how you feel about your abilities, and performances.

Below is a slideshow of images from the weekend. Enjoy!

First and foremost we are super proud of all the dancers who competed in Triple S Dance competition this weekend in Grand Forks. It was our first competition of the 2017 season and the energy and excitement these dancers brought to the stage was contagious! Congratulations to all.

Regardless of score, at GSD we believe that overcoming obstacles, finding ones voice through dance, supporting teammates and other dancers, and sharing their passion and artistry is the most important part of why we do competitive dance.

Each competition is a win for us when the dancers

  • continue to share their art form with an audience and grow more confident as a performing artists;

  • when they continue to grow not only as a dancer, but as a person;

  • when they are inspired by others;

  • when they make friends and continue to blossom current friendships;

  • when they lean on each other when one is ill, injured, having a bad day, or overcoming struggles;

  • when they feel proud of themselves and their hard work;

  • when they know a trophy and winning isn’t everything and that there are greater plans and goals for them as a dancer;

  • when you are recognized for supporting others, even if they are not your own teammates.

To say we are proud of them seems like an understatement. These are just a few important lessons. We learn from each competition, rehearsal, and time spent together. We continue to grow and encourage our dancers to work hard, not for the next competition but for themselves to grow as a dancer, and to continue to challenge themselves and to share their passion through dance on the stage.

Also, thank you to the GSD staff that attended competition this weekend and those who have worked with these dancers this season.

Below is a list of adjudicated results, as well as any specialty awards GSD dancers / studio received.

Congratulations to all studios that competed this weekend. You all did a fantastic job and it’s great to see the growth and changes each season in your dancers. Thank you to Triple S Dance Competition!
